How to help nurse a sick child

The new law is part of President Donald Trump’s administration’s effort to keep more people from dying of respiratory infections and other complications after they travel abroad.
The measure would expand Medicaid coverage to include the cost of a nurse’s bedside care for patients with respiratory conditions and a nursing assistant’s bedtime routine, and expand the number of health care workers who are covered by Medicare.
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, Scott Wong, declined to comment on whether the new rules would increase nursing staffing.
The president is expected to sign the bill Friday.
The nursing rule was introduced by Sens.
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who also sponsored legislation that would allow hospitals and other providers of health-care services to cover the costs of nurse care.
The Sanders-Warren legislation also expanded Medicaid to cover nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other facilities that care for the elderly.
Under the Sanders-Warner legislation, the nursing home and other services would be covered by the health-savings account.
But the administration’s new rules allow hospitals to cover only the costs for a nurse, bedside aide or nursing assistant.
The rules also do not allow the costs to be reimbursed by insurers or employers.
That could cause some people to withdraw from their insurance plans or face higher deductibles.
“This is a good thing.
It’s good for people to have the option of going to the doctor if they get sick, or a nurse for their kids if they have a chronic illness,” said Stephanie Stauffer, a registered nurse who works in the health care field in Boston.
The Nursing Service Organization, the largest private nursing-home association, praised the rule.
“It is important that nursing facilities be able to offer quality, cost-effective nursing care and help patients stay healthy,” the union said in a statement.
“We are thrilled to be able continue to work with the Administration to ensure that the nation’s health-service providers are protected.”
